uni-assist

For all bachelor’s programmes and for some master’s programmes, international applicants from outside the EU who have obtained their degree abroad must apply via uni-assist and undergo a fee-based special procedure:  Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD) - preliminary review documentation process.

Be sure to check whether you need a preliminary review documentation (VPD) before applying to the University of Bayreuth (UBT). If the document is required for your application, you need to apply for the preliminary review documentation (VPD) via uni-assist as well as apply to Univeristy of Bayreuth directly via CAMPUSonline.

Requesting a VPD via uni-assist alone does not qualify as an application for a degree programme at the University of Bayreuth. An appication via CAMPUSonline is always necessary.

In which cases is a VPD required?

Degree programmes requiring a VPDHide

All undergraduate programmes, i.e. all bachelor’s, state examination and teacher ed programmes, require a preliminary document review via uni-assist.

In which cases is submitting a VPD not required?Hide
  • You have German, EU, EEA or Swiss citizenship
  • You are already enrolled as a student at the University of Bayreuth
  • You already have obtained a bachelor’s degree at an accredited university in Germany
  • You have acquired your higher education entrance qualification in Germany; i.e. if you are considered a “Bildungsinländer” (e.g. German Abitur, Fachabitur)

Please note: attending a Studienkolleg in Germany does not make you a Bildungsinländer; Studienkolleg graduates will still need to submit a VPD unless:

  • they were allocated to the Studienkolleg München by the University of Bayreuth and passed the Feststellungsprüfung there

For all other study programmes the application via uni-assist (VPD process) is not obligatory, but possible.

How do I get a VPD?

Please keep in mind that due to uni-assist’s processing time it may take 6-8 weeks for your preliminary review documentation to be issued. You should therefore apply for your VPD as early as possible. We can only accept your VPD if it has been issued for an application to the University of Bayreuth. Your preliminary review documentation will remain valid for one year.

Requesting the VPD at uni-assist:

You need to apply for a preliminary documentation (VPD) via the uni-assist web portal

During the online application at uni-assist, choose University of Bayreuth and your preferred degree programme. A checklist " VPD in 6+1 steps" can be found here.

You can have your documents reviewed by uni-assist any time of the year. If the portal for the desired semester has not yet been opened at uni-assist, simply select the current semester. It does not matter whether you apply for the summer semester or the winter semester at uni-assist.

Apply for your VPD as early as possible - but at the latest 6-8 weeks before the respective application deadline at the University of Bayreuth.

Information on the current uni-assist processing time can be found here.

Please be aware that an application for a preliminary documentation (VPD) does not count as an application to the University of Bayreuth (UBT). You need to apply for your desired degree programme via the UBT application portal CAMPUSonline online as well.

Uploading the required documents to the uni-assist website

You must upload the documents required by uni-assist to the uni-assist website. It is not necessary to submit the documents by post.

If you are applying for a Bachelor's degree programme, you need

  • Higher education entrance qualification in the original language
a  translation if the original document was not issued in German or English

The higher education entrance qualification usually includes your secondary school certificate, e.g. A-Level, and additionally the certificate of your preparatory college assessment test, if you have completed the Studienkolleg; depending on origin and individual background, the higher education entrance qualification may also include other documents

If you are applying for a Master's degree programme, you need

  • Degree certificate BACHELOR (or equivalent)
a  translation if the original document was not issued in German or English
  • Transcript of Records BACHELOR (or equivalent) with an overview of subjects and grades
a  translation if the original document was not issued in German or English

Depending on the country in which you acquired your previous education certificates, you may have to submit additional documents. Language certificates are not necessary for the application to uni-assist.

Please also refer to the country information provided by uni-assist.

Please note that if you are admitted, you must present certified hardcopies of all documents demanded by uni-assist for proof of your higher education entrance qualification upon enrollment.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I apply via uni-assist?Hide

You should apply at the earliest possible time, as the processing time of uni-assist can be 6-8 weeks. Please apply for your preliminary document review by mid-November for applications for the summer semester and by mid-May for applications for the winter semester.

How can I select my desired degree programme via uni-assist?Hide

After registration and filling in your personal data, please select "search of study offers". Choose the semester, the desired qualification (Bachelor or Master) and the university (University of Bayreuth). The system will then display all degree programs. Please select your desired degree programme.

How much does the preliminary document review cost?Hide

Information on the costs of the preliminary document review is available here.

Can I also apply with a uni-assist test report?Hide

That depends.  If you have submitted a complete application for the University of Bayreuth via uni-assist, the test report can also be accepted with your application, provided it was not issued longer than one year ago.
However, if uni-assist has not received an application for the University of Bayreuth (but rather for a different university) or it was made over one year ago, the test report cannot be accepted.

Can I apply for several programmes with one single VPD?Hide

You can apply for all our programmes with one single VPD, as long as it is not older than a year and as long as it has been issued for an application for the University of Bayreuth.

What happens to my application if I don't submit my VPD on time?Hide

If you have not submitted your preliminary document review to us by the specified deadline in accordance with the instructions in CAMPUSonline, your application will be deemed not to have been received on time and you will then receive a letter of denial. Please submit your application to uni-assist as early as possible, as the processing time of uni-assist can be 6-8 weeks.
Unfortunately, if you missed the application deadline, you would need to reapply for the next semester using the preliminary document review you received. Since the preliminary document review remains valid for one year, a new application to uni-assist is not necessary.

Do I need a VPD if I am already studying in Germany?Hide

If you have acquired your higher education entrance qualification in a non-EU country, you must apply via uni-assist. Since the admission criteria may vary from university to university, it is imperative that the higher education entrance qualification of each applicant be checked, regardless of whether he or she has already been enrolled at a German university. For some degree programmes, this review is carried out for us by uni-assist.

Please note:

The request for preliminary review documentation (VPD) via the online portal at uni-assist is NOT yet an application to the University of Bayreuth. In addition, an application in due form and time via the application portal CAMPUSonline at the University of Bayreuth is always necessary.

Your application to the UBT is only considered to have been received in due form and time if you have also applied via our portal CAMPUSonline and have submitted all required documents there, including your Preliminary Review Documentation (VPD), in due form and time. Detailed information on the full application process is available on the relevant degree programme pages.
