uni-assist

For all bachelor’s programmes and for some master’s programmes, international applicants from outside the EU who have obtained their degree abroad must apply via uni-assist and undergo a fee-based special procedure (Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD) - preliminary document review process). Detailed checklist for applying via uni-assist.

Requesting a VPD via uni-assist alone does not count as an application for a degree programme at the University of Bayreuth.

In which cases is a VPD required?

Degree programmes requiring a VPDHide

All undergraduate programmes, i.e. all bachelor’s, state examination and teacher ed programmes, require a preliminary document review via uni-assist.

In which cases is submitting a VPD not required?Hide
  • You have German or EU citizenship
  • You are already enrolled as a student at the University of Bayreuth
  • You already have obtained a bachelor’s degree at an accredited university in Germany
  • You have acquired your higher education entrance qualification in Germany; i.e. if you are considered a “Bildungsinländer” (e.g. German Abitur, Fachabitur)

please note: attending a Studienkolleg in Germany does not make you a Bildungsinländer; Studienkolleg graduates will still need to submit a VPD unless:

  • they were allocated to the Studienkolleg München by the University of Bayreuth and passed the Feststellungsprüfung there

In which cases is submitting a VPD not required?Hide
  • You have German or EU citizenship
  • You are already enrolled as a student at the University of Bayreuth
  • You already have obtained your entrance qualification for master’s programmes (usually your first degree) at an accredited university in Germany

For all other study programmes the application via uni-assist (VPD process) is not obligatory, but possible.

Your preliminary document review will remain valid for one year.

Please keep in mind that due to uni-assist’s processing time it may take 6-8 weeks for your preliminary documentation review to be issued. You should therefore apply for your VPD as early as possible. We can only accept your VPD if it has been issued for an application to the University of Bayreuth.

Applying via uni-assist is only the first application step. Your application will only be considered to have been received in due form and time if you have also applied via our CAMPUSonline platform and have submitted all the required documents, including your preliminary document review, in due form and time. Detailed information on the full application process is available on the relevant degree programme pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a VPD if I am already studying in Germany?Hide

If you have acquired your higher education entrance qualification in a non-EU country, you must apply via uni-assist. Since the admission criteria may vary from university to university, it is imperative that the higher education entrance qualification of each applicant be checked, regardless of whether he or she has already been enrolled at a German university. For some degree programmes, this review is carried out for us by uni-assist.

Can I also apply with a uni-assist test report?Hide

That depends.  If you have submitted a complete application for the University of Bayreuth via uni-assist, the test report can also be accepted with your application, provided it was not issued longer than one year ago.
However, if uni-assist has not received an application for the University of Bayreuth (but rather for a different university) or it was made over one year ago, the test report cannot be accepted.

When should I apply via uni-assist?Hide

You should apply at the earliest possible time, as the processing time of uni-assist can be 6-8 weeks. Please apply for your preliminary document review by mid-November for applications for the summer semester and by mid-May for applications for the winter semester.

Which documents do I have to enclose with my uni-assist application?Hide

Uni-assist reviews the higher education entrance qualification and if necessary also the entrance qualification for a master’s programme. You must therefore submit all the documents necessary for this review together with your application:

  • CV
  • Secondary school leaving certificate with an overview of subjects and grades in the original language
  • Secondary school leaving certificate with an overview of subjects and grades in sworn translation (in German or English)
  • If you have attended a Studienkolleg in Germany: Certificate of having passed the aptitude assessment examination
  • If you've already studied: Proof of your previous academic performance (Transcript of Records) and, if already available, your degree certificate; both in the original language and as a German or English translation
  • If applicable, further country-specific additional documents:

Australia

  • Proof of higher education entrance examination

Bosnia and Herzegovina

  • Proof of higher education entrance examination

Chile

  • Proof of higher education entrance examination

China

  • APS Certificate
  • If applicable, APS recertification
  • TestAS Certificate (mandatory if APS is only valid together with TestAS)

Fiji

  • Proof of higher education entrance examination

Hongkong

  • Proof of higher education entrance examination

Iran

  • Nachweis Pre-University Course
  • Proof of higher education entrance examination

Japan

  • Proof of higher education entrance examination

Kazakhstan

  • School progress sheet

Macedonia

  • Proof of higher education entrance examination

Mongolia

  • APS Certificate
  • If applicable, APS recertification
  • TestAS Certificate (mandatory if APS is only valid together with TestAS)

South Korea

  • Proof of higher education entrance examination

Spain

  • Proof of higher education entrance examination (EAU, PAU)

Tanzania

  • Proof of higher education entrance examination

Trinidad and Tobago

USA

  • Proof of higher education entrance examination (EAU, PAU)

Vietnam

  • APS Certificate

  • TestAS Certificate (mandatory if APS is only valid together with TestAS)

You can submit language certificates via uni-assist, but these will only be checked by the University of Bayreuth. Documents which the University of Bayreuth needs exclusively for the subject-specific assessment (e.g. the letter of motivation) do not have to be submitted via uni-assist.

What happens to my application if I don't submit my VPD on time?Hide

If you have not submitted your preliminary document review to us by the specified deadline in accordance with the instructions in CAMPUSonline, your application will be deemed not to have been received on time and you will then receive a letter of denial. Please submit your application to uni-assist as early as possible, as the processing time of uni-assist can be 6-8 weeks.
Unfortunately, if you missed the application deadline, you would need to reapply for the next semester using the preliminary document review you received. Since the preliminary document review remains valid for one year, a new application to uni-assist is not necessary.

I cannot select my desired degree programme via uni-assist.Hide

After registration and filling in your personal data, please select "search of study offers". Choose the semester, the desired qualification (Bachelor or Master) and the university (University of Bayreuth). Don't choose an academic field. The system will then display "all courses". This is important because your application at the University of Bayreuth is not limited to a specific programme of study.

How much does the preliminary document review cost?Hide

Information on the costs of the preliminary document review is available here.

Can I apply for several programmes with one single VPD?Hide

You can apply for all our programmes with one single VPD, as long as it is not older than a year and as long as it has been issued for an application for the University of Bayreuth.
