uni-assist

BandSV1

International applicants from outside the EU who have obtained their degree abroad must undergo a fee-based special procedure and request the issuance of the document "preliminary review documentation" (Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD) via uni-assist. The University Application Service for International Students uni-assist e.V. processes international student applications as an external partner for the University of Bayreuth.

What is a preliminary review documentation (VPD)?

  • The VPD is a certificate from uni-assist that you need for your application, which you must submit directly to the University of Bayreuth.
  • The VPD contains information on which educational certificates you presented to uni-assist, which kind of university entrance is possible with these certificates, and how uni-assist rates your grade within the German system of grades.

The University of Bayreuth must also check whether you fulfil the respective formal and academic admission requirements for your desired degree programme in your application in the CAMPUSonline applicant portal.

Be sure to check whether you need a VPD before applying to UBT:

Who has to request a VPD from uni-assist for an application to the University of Bayreuth?Hide
  • All international applicants from outside the EU for a bachelor's or teaching degree, who did not obtain their university entrance qualification in Germany or from a school that offers the equivalent of the German Abitur exam. This also applies to applicants pursuing pursuing a place on any degree programme in an advanced semester.

  • All international applicants from outside the EU for a master's degree who did not obtain their qualification for postgraduate studies (usually a bachelor's degree) in Germany. Applicants with a qualification for postgraduate studies obtained in Switzerland do not need a preliminary documentation. Applicants with a bachelor's degree from the UK must apply via uni-assist.

  • All international applicants from outside the EU with an International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) who do not yet have a notification of the Office for Certificate Recognition.

  • International applicants from outside the EU who have completed preparatory studies in a Studienkolleg in Germany (unless:they were referred to the Studienkolleg München by the University of Bayreuth and passed the assessment test (Feststellungsprüfung).
In which cases is it not necessary to submit a VPD?Hide

  • You have acquired your higher education entrance qualification in the German educational system;
i.e. if you are considered a “Bildungsinländer” (e.g. German Abitur, Fachabitur).
Please note: attending a Studienkolleg in Germany does not make you a Bildungsinländer; Studienkolleg graduates will still need to submit a VPD, unless:They were allocated to the Studienkolleg München by the University of Bayreuth and passed the Feststellungsprüfung there.
  • You have already obtained your entrance qualification for master’s programmes (usually your undergraduate/bachelor's degree) at an accredited university in Germany.

  • You have already been admitted to the relevant degree programme at UBT for a previous semester without preliminary review documentation from uni-assist.

If the VPD document is required for your application, you need to:

uni-assist co full application ubt

  • request a preliminary review documentation (VPD)
    via the uni-assist web portal
  • apply directly to the UBT for the desired degree programme
    via the application portal CAMPUSonline

If one of the two steps is missing, your application cannot be considered. You can apply to the University of Bayreuth as soon as you have requested the VPD and can provide us with your uni-assist number. However, the VPD certificate must always be submitted later.

You can have your documents reviewed by uni-assist any time of the year. It does not matter whether you request the VPD for the summer semester or the winter semester at uni-assist. The VPD is valid from the date of issue.

Please note that the uni-assist web portal is always open for the current semester in order to request a VPD. At the moment you can find our degree programmes at uni-assist in the summer semester 2025.

If the portal for the desired semester has not yet been opened at uni-assist, simply select the current semester. You can request a VPD that you need, for example, to apply for the winter semester at the UBT in the previous summer semester from uni-assist.

Your way to the VPD - Step by Step:

1. Requesting the VPD at uni-assistHide

You need to request a preliminary review documentation (VPD) via the uni-assist web portal.

At the moment you can find our degree programmes at uni-assist in the summer semester 2025.In the uni-assist web portal, please select ‘University of Bayreuth’ as the university and your desired degree programme.

You can have your documents reviewed by uni-assist any time of the year. If the portal for the desired semester has not yet been opened at uni-assist, simply select the current semester. It does not matter whether you request the VPD for the summer semester or the winter semester at uni-assist. Please note, however, that the application deadline at UBT must be met (see step 4).

Please be aware that a request for preliminary review documentation via the uni-assist online portal alone does not qualify as an application for a degree programme at UBT! An application to UBT for the desired degree programme via the CAMPUSonline application portal is always necessary.

2. Uploading the required documents to the uni-assist websiteHide

You must upload the documents required by uni-assist within the deadline (see step 4) to the uni-assist website.

For a Bachelor's degree programme, you need:

  • a copy of your higher education entrance qualification in the original language (the higher education entrance qualification usually includes your secondary school certificate, e.g. A-Levels, and additionally the certificate of your preparatory college assessment test if you have completed the Studienkolleg.  Depending on origin and individual background, the higher education entrance qualification may also include other documents),
  • a translation if the original document was not issued in German or English.

Please note that if you are admitted, you must present all documents demanded by uni-assist for proof of your higher education entrance qualification upon enrollment.

For a Master's degree programme, you usually need:

  • a copy of your degree certificate (if already available),
  • a copy of your subjects and grades (transcript),
  • a  translation if the original documents were not issued in German or English.

Uni-assist may require additional documents from you in order to issue the VPD.

Please upload only those documents that are relevant to your VPD request. The following documents are not required: identification, motivation letters, essays or language certificates.

The request is not complete until all required documents have been uploaded to the uni-assist website and the handling fees have been paid to uni-assist. The documents and the payment must reach uni-assist before the respective UBT application deadline otherwise the VPD has not been requested for in due time.

3. Payment of the handling fees at uni-assistHide

For the evaluation of your certificates, uni-assist charges handling fees. You must pay these to uni-assist in due time. Here you can find more information about the costs incurred.

Please note that your application cannot be processed without this transfer. More information about the bank transfer

An application to the University of Bayreuth for your desired degree programme and the submission of documents is only possible during the respective application period.

5. Confirmation in CAMPUSonline that the VPD has been requested in due form and in due timeHide

Please read the explanation for the status “temporarily not complete” in your CAMPUSonline application. The status “temporarily not complete” mostly just means that you still need to replace the document with the final VPD once you have it.

If you have requested the VPD on time and in full, you will be given a grace period of up to four weeks. The University of Bayreuth reserves the right to set a shorter grace period for degree programmes with admission restrictions or aptitude procedures.

7. Receipt of final VPD certificateHide

Uni-assist usually needs about 4 to 6 weeks to process your application. Please plan a few extra days, as additional enquiries may delay the process.

After uni-assist has finished processing your request, the final preliminary review documentation (VPD) will be sent to you via email as a PDF.

Your VPD will be accepted by UBT for up to 2 years after issuance as long as there have been no changes to your higher education entrance qualification (in the case of an application for Bachelor's degree programmes) or your Master's entrance qualification (in the case of an application for Master's degree programmes), or the admission requirements.

A VPD, which is for another university, will not be accepted by the University of Bayreuth.

8. Upload of the final VPD certificate in CAMPUSonlineHide

Now upload the final preliminary review documentation (VPD) in your application in CAMPUSonline within the grace period (see step 6).

The grace period for this will only be given if all other application documents except the VPD have been uploaded correctly and completely. Prior to this, participation in an aptitude assessment is not possible.

What happens to my application if I don't submit my VPD on time?Hide

If you have requested the VPD on time and in full, you will be given a grace period of up to four weeks. The University of Bayreuth reserves the right to set a shorter grace period for degree programmes with admission restrictions or aptitude procedures.

If you have not submitted your VPD to us by the deadline in accordance with the instructions in CAMPUSonline, your application will be deemed not to have been received on time and you will receive a letter of denial. Please request your VPD via uni-assist as early as possible, as the processing time of uni-assist can be 6-8 weeks.

Unfortunately, if you miss the application deadline, you will need to reapply for the next semester using the VPD you received. Since the VPD remains valid for 2 years, requesting a new VPD at uni-assist is not necessary.

Do I need a VPD if I am already studying in Germany?Hide

If you have acquired your higher education entrance qualification in a non-EU country, you must request a VPD via uni-assist. Since the admission criteria may vary from university to university, it is imperative that the higher education entrance qualification of each applicant be checked, regardless of whether he or she has already been enrolled at a German university. For most degree programmes, this review is carried out for us by uni-assist.

Can I request the VPD even if I have not yet completed my studies?Hide

You can request the VPD with provisional certificates. You will then need a certificate from your university confirming that you are about to graduate and that you have already completed your studies.
