Glossary for application and enrolment documents
On this page you will find information about the documents you need for application and enrolment to the University of Bayreuth. We will show you what is behind the individual designations, where you can get the documents from, and in what form you need to submit them.

Documents for admission (to be submitted in digital form)
In general, documents must be uploaded digitally in pdf format on our application platform CAMPUSonline. Sometimes the Excel or Word format is also necessary. No documents need to be sent by post for the application.

1. Documents from school

A Secondary school leaving certificate is the document or documents with which you prove your higher education entrance qualification in Germany. A Higher education entrance qualification is a certificate that attests to your eligibility to study at a higher education institution (e.g. Abitur, Matura, Baccalauréat, Diploma di Licenza/Maturità, A-levels, Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate, etc.). In some countries, an extra entrance exam must be taken in addition to the school-leaving certificate for access to higher education. You can check whether this applies to your country in our country-specific documents.
If a university entrance examination is not compulsory in your country, you do not need to submit the document.

2. Documents from previous university studies

In order to be able to convert your final grade into the German system, we need the maximum grade that can be achieved as well as the minimum grade required to complete the degree (not to pass the individual courses).
Accepted evidence:- Transcript of Records (e.g. on the back).

- Extract from the study or examination regulations of your degree programme or previous higher education institution

You will receive this document from the university at which you were last enrolled. It contains all passed modules of a degree programme, including the credits awarded for them and examination grades.
It contains the final thesis with grades and, as a rule, a final average grade.
Some universities do not issue separate degree certificates, but only a final Transcript of Records.
In this case, the final transcript of records is considered a certificate if it confirms that the degree programme has been successfully completed and all credits and grades of all study achievements, including the final examination, are listed there.
If you have not yet received your final Transcript of Records, please submit the preliminary transcript or the overview of grades for the individual academic years/semesters.
Even if you already have a Master's degree, please still submit the study documents from your Bachelor's degree.

- Master's access qualificationHide

A Master's access qualification is an academic degree that gives access to a Master's programme at a German university.
The most common Master's access qualification is a completed Bachelor's degree. Other degrees of equal or higher value (Master's, Diplom, Magister, etc.) can also provide access to a Master's programme.
Degrees from foreign universities must be at least equivalent to a 3-year Bachelor's degree at a German university in order to be recognised as a Master's access qualification. The anabin database provides initial guidance as to whether a foreign university degree allows access to a Master's programme in Germany.
Exception: Computational Mathematics M.Sc. - here a 4-year Bachelor's degree is required.If you have not yet completed the relevant degree programme at the time of application, then you can also submit a current transcript with all achievements to date. The binding regulations on the qualification requirements for a Master's degree programme can be found in the subject examination and study regulations.

Certificate for applicants with school or university degrees or periods of study from the People's Republic of China, Vietnam and India issued by the respective APS offices of the German embassies.
APS India: Please submit the APS certificate by the application deadline of your programme at the latest.

3. Language certificate

To apply to the University of Bayreuth for all German-language degree programmes, you must provide proof of German language skills at least at level B2 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages).
For enrolment you need one of the following certificates:
- German language proficiency test for international university applicants (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für ausländische Studienbewerber und –bewerberinnen, DSH) with a result of at least DSH 1
- Test of German as a foreign language (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache, TestDaF) with a result of at least 14 points - no part under TDN 3)
- ÖSD Zertifikat B2
- Goethe-Zertifikat B2
- telc Deutsch B2
- B2 certificate IIK Bayreuth
Whether level B2, C1 or DSH-2 is required for enrolment in the degree programme you are aiming for depends on the respective examination regulations.

To apply to the University of Bayreuth for all German-language degree programmes, you must provide proof of German language skills at least at level B2 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages).
For enrolment you need one of the following certificates:

For purely English-language degree programmes, you do not need proof of German language skills for admission. However, you must prove basic knowledge of the German language by the end of the 2nd semester.
This can be done by means of a corresponding certificate (Goethe, Unicert) or you can take an A1 German course at the Language Centre of the University of Bayreuth during the semester. You can find further language courses in Bayreuth at the IIK or the Volkshochschule.
If you already have this proof for your application, you are welcome to upload it. If you do not yet have the proof of German for the application, you can skip the document and do not need to upload anything.

For English-taught degree programmes, English language skills must be proven at least at level B2 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages), unless the respective examination and study regulations specify higher or lower requirements.
Please check the respective programme page or the study and examination regulations or ask the respective programme moderator which language certificates are accepted for your programme.
If you would like to provide proof in the form of a confirmation of the language of education, then the confirmation must be issued by an administrative unit of your home university on the official paper of the university and must have a seal and original signature. However, such a certificate is not accepted as proof of English by all degree programmes.

4. Further proof of qualifications

If your (preliminary) average grade is not at least 1.9, you must apply for an improvement of the average grade. Please use the template provided in CAMPUSonline and upload it again after completing it. You can submit this proof when applying for the following Master's programme:

This document only needs to be uploaded if you have been admitted to the relevant degree programme at the University of Bayreuth from a previous semester but have not taken up the degree programme. If you are applying for this degree programme for the first time, you do not need to upload anything here.

We require a current, tabular CV with your complete career up to the time of your current application to the Universiy of Bayreuth. It must contain precise and comprehensive information about your educational background (schools, dates of (final) examinations, etc.). Please provide information on every period up to the month of your application to the University of Bayreuth and do not leave any gaps - even if you have not attended school or university or worked (e.g. longer periods of holiday and time off). This is the only way we can trace your educational path.

The document Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD) must be applied for at uni-assist if you
- do not have citizenship of Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein or a member state of the EU
- are not a "Bildungsinländer:in" (i.e. have not acquired a school-leaving certificate or Bachelor's degree in the German education system)
- are applying for a degree programme for which the VPD is required (see link above)
Test reports and VPDs from other universities cannot be accepted!

If you are unable to take an aptitude test in whole or in part in the intended form due to a prolonged or permanent disability, an application for disadvantage compensation can be submitted. Proof of the examination disability must be provided in the form of a medical certificate, which can be uploaded here.

6. Documents for specific degree programmes
- Additional questionnaire concerning number of semester hours (per week and subject)Hide

An Excel template is provided in CAMPUSonline. Please enter the workload in hours per week for each module of your Bachelor's programme (= SWS = semester hours per week). This includes attendance time (i.e. time spent in lectures, tutorials, seminars, etc.) and self-study time (i.e. preparation for and follow-up on courses, homework, solving exercises or preparing for exams). The examination board requires this information for the equivalency examination.
You must submit the additional questionnaire SWS when applying for the following Master's degree programmes:
- Automotive and Mechatronics
- Biotechnology and Chemical Process Engineering

- Materials Science and Materials Engineering
If your Transcript of Records or Diploma Supplement already shows your academic achievements with ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), you do not need to complete this questionnaire. This is the case, for example, if you have previously studied in the European Union.

The document "Informal declaration about the independent preparation of the written presentation of course-specific competencies" is a signed statement that the motivation letter was written independently, without the help of others, and that any thoughts taken from other sources were identified as such. Example: I hereby confirm that my application with the reasons for choosing the course of study is my own work and was prepared without the help of others. Thoughts taken from external sources are marked as such.

- Proof of GRE General Test scoresHide

To be submitted by applicants for the programme Economics (M. Sc.):
If your bachelor's degree is from a university outside the European Union and there is no formal Partnership / Learning Agreement of the university with the University of Bayreuth, you will have to submit proof of GRE General Test test results that lie in the top 25 %.
This test result has to be submitted by the application deadline otherwise the application will be rejected. The GRE General Test test result cannot be substituted by any other tests.

Documents for enrolment (to be submitted in paper form)
Please refer to the information on the individual documents in the section "Documents for enrolment".
The options here are:
- Original: The original document must be submitted.
- Simple copy: Here you can also make a copy yourself.
- Certified copy: If you are to submit a certified copy, the documents must be copied by an office that is authorised to make certified copies. The body will then stamp the copy with a seal and sign it. Such offices are, for example: issuing school/university, offices of the public service in Germany (e.g. in a city administration), notary public.

We require a recent photo in which you can be clearly recognised. The photo does not have to be biometric, but should be oriented towards the usual format for passport photos (3.5 x 4.5 cm). It will be used for the student ID card.

The certificate of study history contains an overview of when, where, how long and in which degree programme in Germany you were previously enrolled. Often, this information can also be found on the certificate of exmatriculation. Ideally, the number of university semesters is noted on it. Unfortunately, a "Transcript of Records" is not sufficient. You can also submit certificates of study for the individual semesters. If you have already been enrolled at several universities, you must submit a study progress certificate from each university. As a rule, you will receive the certificate of study history from the student office of your university.

- Evidence of student health insuranceHide

For enrolment, a statutory health insurance company in Germany (e.g. AOK, TK, BEK etc.) must digitally transfer your insurance data to the University of Bayreuth. You must apply for this directly with the statutory health insurance company. This also applies if you are privately or family insured or have health insurance in another EU country.
The transfer will only take place after you have been admitted to study at the University of Bayreuth and at the student's request.
You can find more information on the website with more detailed information on compulsory health insurance.If you are applying for the Studienkolleg or a doctorate, then you do not have to submit the certificate of student health insurance. This is also not required once you have reached 30 years of age.

This document is only required if you have already studied this or a very similar degree programme in Germany. We require a confirmation from your previous university in Germany that you are still allowed to study this subject and have not lost the claim to sit exams in this area (eg. if you were expulsed due to failing an exam too often).

If you have a disability or chronik illness and wish to apply for a disadvantage compensation, you can receive more information on the granting of disadvantage compensation from becks - Office of the Commissioner for Students with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses.
You can submit this proof when applying for many of our Master's degree programmes.
