Application and selection process

Find out here how to apply for a semester abroad at one of our partner universities worldwide – from the initial application to acceptance by your partner university.

Schedule and application phasesHide

The application process consists of two phases:

Phase 1:  Application to the University of Bayreuth

  • internal eligibility assessment
  • Allocation of a place in the respective program

This is not yet a final acceptance from the partner university

Application deadline: December 1 for stays in the following academic year (winter and summer semesters).

Phase 2: Application to the partner university

  • Submission of the required documents by the deadlines of the respective university
  • Waiting for the official letter of acceptance. Only with admission is your stay bindingly confirmed
Step by step: How the application process worksHide
  • Online application:
Submit your application using the application form on the relevant MoveON portal. You can apply to up to three universities—both within Europe (Erasmus+) and outside Europe (Global & Erasmus International).
  • Places offered by the International Office:
After your documents have been reviewed, you will receive a nomination offer for a partner university in our programs.
  • Accepting the offer:
Decide whether you would like to accept the nomination offer.
  • Nomination by the University of Bayreuth:
Once you have accepted the offer, you will be pre-registered (nominated) at the partner university. However, this is only a suggestion—the final decision is made by the partner university. Please note: Nominations may be rejected by partner institutions for various reasons.
  • Application to the partner university:
Submit your complete application documents to the partner university by the deadline.
  • Letter of acceptance & preparation:
Once you have received the official letter of acceptance, you can start planning your stay.

Please also note the safety precautions for your host country.

Note: If you do not receive a place in the first round, you can reapply in the subsequent rounds for remaining places.

Online application in the MoveON systemHide
  • Register with your personal details in the application portal.
  • Enter up to 3 target universities for each program (Europe or worldwide).
  • Upload all required documents in the application form.

You can edit your application until the deadline—incomplete applications will not be considered after the deadline.

Click here to access the application portals and forms.

Required application documentsHide
  • Copy of passport or identity card
  • Certificate of enrollment (from cmlife)
  • Language certificate or proof of language proficiency (information on accepted certificates can be found here.)
  • Transcript of records with at least 20 ECTS credits
Note: Master's students without 20 ECTS credits must submit their bachelor's degree transcript or bachelor's degree certificate.
  • Letter of motivation (only using the official template)

Tip: For assistance with your letter of motivation, please contact the Writing Center at the University of Bayreuth.

Selection processHide

The selection process usually takes 3 to 8 weeks.

The selection criteria are:

  • Language skills in the language of instruction (language barrier model*),
  • academic performance, and
  • personal motivation.

Each application is assigned a score based on the applicant's grade point average and motivation. Academic performance accounts for approximately 75% of the evaluation.

Places are then awarded on a priority basis to the students with the highest scores.

Please note that for non-subject-specific collaborations (outside Europe), all degree programs are compared purely on the basis of the current grade point average. The individual degree programs are not weighted.

*The language barrier model serves to ensure quality in the selection process. Successful applicants must demonstrate sufficient foreign language skills in the language of instruction or working language in the form of a current language certificate. Applicants who do not meet this language barrier cannot be considered in the selection process.

FeedbackHide

You will receive the result of your application on the MoveON portal.

  • Confirm or decline your place offer or scholarship on the portal.
  • If you do not receive an offer, you can reapply in the remaining place rounds.
Remaining placesHide

Internal call for remaining spots

Unsuccessful applicants from the first round will receive a list of remaining places. The prerequisite is a complete application by December 1.

Open call for remaining spots in summer semester

Further remaining spots will be advertised from June 15 to July 15.
