ERASMUS+ Programme
Through the partnership agreements in the Erasmus+ program, each exchange place is linked to financial support. No separate application for funding is required. The Erasmus program's support for studying abroad includes, on the one hand, the waiver of tuition fees at our Erasmus partner universities abroad and, on the other hand, partial financial support from EU funds.
At the University of Bayreuth, we offer exchange opportunities within and outside Europe as part of ERASMUS+.
- Program benefitsHide
-
- Tuition fees at the host university are waived;
- Grants depend on the destination country and can be combined with BAföG benefits;
- Students with fewer opportunities can receive a grant for additional costs in the form of a top-up;
- Students with disabilities can receive a grant for additional costs incurred during an Erasmus stay and, if necessary, apply for a real cost grant.
Erasmus program benefits usually run for one semester. However, funded stays lasting two semesters are also possible.
Detailed information on the Erasmus+ financial grant is available here.
- Tuition fees at the host university are waived;
- Eligibility requirementsHide
-
To be eligible for funding, the stay must meet the following conditions:
- Take place at a UBT partner university with an Erasmus+ agreement (IIA),
- be associated with the acquisition (not recognition) of at least 20 ECTS credits at the host university, and
- be completed during the enrollment period at the University of Bayreuth.
- Funding rates for mobilityHide
-
Financial support for Erasmus+ semester stays is based on the different costs of living in the destination countries, as well as the social background of the students and their choice of transportation.
Country rates
- Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Sweden, United Kingdom: EUR 600/month
- Estonia, Greece, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czechia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Turkey, Hungary: EUR 540/month
- Partner countries outside Europe: EUR 700/month
Please note that in the Erasmus program, each month is calculated as 30 days. The daily grant amount therefore corresponds to 1/30 of the monthly grant rate. Currently, 135 days of stay per semester can be funded. You can find out more about this under the tab “Grant amount”.
Note: The funding rates are set by the DAAD's national agency and can only be viewed on this page. Please note that different funding rates may apply in different project years. The application at the University of Bayreuth is determined by the available funding budget and funding project.
Travel allowance
In addition, students participating in the 2025 funding project receive a travel allowance, which depends on the distance between Bayreuth and the host university and the means of transport used (see funding opportunities for sustainable travel), as well as subsidized travel days as needed.

- Top-up for students with fewer opportunities (“social top-up”)Hide
-
In the Erasmus+ program for the 2021-2027 program generation, students who have to overcome particular social hurdles when studying abroad are to receive additional support (Social Top-Up).
For this reason, students with so-called 'fewer opportunities' in the current projects receive an additional EUR 250 per month on top of their Erasmus+ grant.
According to the ERASMUS+ guidelines, this currently applies to the following groups:
- Undergraduate and postgraduate students travelling abroad with children,
- First degree students Students from a non-academic family,
- students in employment,
- Students and graduates with a disability of GdB 20 or more or a chronic illness that leads to additional financial needs.
Even if several criteria apply, the top-up can only be granted once. It is not possible to add several social top-ups together.
The application for the grant is made online when submitting the planned data for the grant.
According to the ERASMUS programme regulations, subsequent applications are not permitted.
Criteria for financial aid
Students with a disability or chronic illness
- Students with a chronic illness or a disability with a degree of disability of 20, which results in additional financial needs that are not covered by health insurance, can receive a top-up amount of 250 euros per month.
As proof, we ask for a certificate from the treating medical professional confirming the additional financial need.
- Alternatively, students who incur higher additional costs due to their disability or chronic illness can apply to the DAAD for real costs with the support of the University of Bayreuth. Please contact outgoing-erasmus@uni-bayreuth.de for this purpose. The application must be submitted to the NA DAAD by the University of Bayreuth at least two months before your departure. Unfortunately, applications submitted shortly before or after the start of your studies abroad cannot be considered.
Students travelling abroad with children
- Students who are travelling abroad with their child/children to study can apply for this top-up. The prerequisite is that the child or children are taken along for the entire stay.
- The additional funding can also be granted for couples. However, double sponsorship of a child is excluded.
- If both parents are subsidised when taking at least two children with them, both parents can receive the subsidy for taking one child with them.
Please submit the birth certificates of the child/children as proof.
Students from a non-academic family
- Neither parent or carer has a degree from a university or university of applied sciences.
- A degree from a university of cooperative education that leads to a qualification comparable to a university degree is to be counted as an academic qualification. In cases of doubt, please refer to the Internet portal Hochschulkompass provided by the HRK and the website of the Accreditation Council Foundation for the evaluation of degrees.
- In this context, a master craftsman's certificate is not to be equated with an academic degree.
- Degree courses completed abroad by one of the parents that are not recognised as such in Germany (e.g. physiotherapy) are deemed to be academic qualifications in the context of the eligibility criteria for receiving additional funding, meaning that there is no entitlement to the top-up amount.
As proof, we ask for a signed declaration of honour from the parents.
Students in Employment
- The activity in the country of posting is not continued during the stay abroad (this also includes mobile working, online working, paid holidays, etc.).
Cancellation is not a prerequisite; the employment contract can also be paused. - The activity must have been carried out for at least 6 full, consecutive months at the time of applying for the grant agreement.
- During the minimum period of employment prior to application, the monthly income must be above EUR 450 and below EUR 850 (net earnings from all activities added up per month). Please note: Universities may decide to allow an averaged calculation of earnings while maintaining equal treatment and documentation requirements, provided that the earnings averaged over six consecutive months are above EUR 450 and below EUR 850 per month.
- This does not apply to self-employed activities and dual/part-time study programmes with a fixed salary.
As proof, we ask for a signed declaration of honour from the employer.
- Funding opportunities for sustainable travel (Green Travel)Hide
-
Participants in the Erasmus+ programme should be made aware of the issues of sustainability, climate change and environmental protection and, in particular, of the ecological footprint that participants generate through their mobility. By financially promoting the use of sustainable means of transport, the number of mobilities with more environmentally friendly means of transport is to be increased and the ecological footprint of the Erasmus+ programme reduced.
According to the Erasmus+ guidelines, the majority (>50%) of environmentally friendly journeys are made using sustainable means of transport such as bus, train, bicycle or car sharing.
Travelling by car without a passenger or by plane or ferry is not considered low-emission.
Participants who need more time to travel due to the use of sustainable means of transport can receive up to six additional travel days to cover accommodation costs for the travel time before and after the mobility in accordance with the guidelines for individual support in addition to the higher travel allowance.
We recommend the following additional support days:
Distance Funding days 100 - 499 km 1 day per direction of travel (outward or homeward journey) 500 - 1999 km 2 days per direction of travel (outward or homeward journey) more than 2000 km 3 days per direction of travel (outward or homeward journey) You can apply for the subsidy online when submitting the planned dates for the subsidy.
If you require more travel days than indicated here, you can submit an application in the online form.
Important:
- According to the ERASMUS programme regulations, subsequent applications are not permitted.
- Proof of climate-friendly travel will be checked on a random basis. The original receipts for environmentally friendly travel to and from the programme must therefore be kept for five years and submitted to the International Office for verification upon request. If proof cannot be provided, the funding must be repaid.
- Funding amountHide
-
Funding is calculated monthly on the basis of the above-mentioned funding rates and can be drawn for a maximum of 360 days per study cycle (exception: single-course degree programmes). A combination of study programme and internship is possible.
Please note:
- Due to the available funding in the 2024 project, a maximum of 120 days per semester will be funded in the 2024/25 academic year. This regulation also applies to the 2025 project and the 2025/26 academic year.
- A prerequisite for Erasmus funding is the acquisition of 20 ECTS points at the host university. The recognition of these for the study programme in Bayreuth is not mandatory.
Payment is made in 2 instalments:
- 1st instalment - approximately 70% of the planned total funding (after the start of the stay)
- 2nd instalment - remaining amount of the final total funding (after the end of the stay)
The basis for the first payment is the period of stay specified by the host university in the Letter of Acceptance.
The final calculation of the funding amount is based on the actual duration of the stay, which is confirmed by the foreign host university in the Certificate of Attendance.
- Reclaiming the grant for study abroadHide
-
The International Office must provide the DAAD / EU in Bonn with proof of study abroad in the form of complete funding documents. If the documents have not been submitted in full, the entire study abroad grant must be repaid.
The basis for repayment is also the completion of less than 20 ECTS points per semester at the host university abroad.
Funding documents
Due to the Erasmus without Paper (EWP) project, Erasmus+ funding is now largely processed online via the MoveOn portal.
