What academic qualifications do I need for this degree programme?
You need a bachelor's degree with an examination grade of “2.5” (converted German overall grade) or better in Interdisciplinary African Studies or International Economics & Development or Geographies of international Development, Focus on Africa or Philosophy and Economics or Geography: Society and Environment or Culture & Society in the subject area Sociology from the University of Bayreuth, or an equivalent degree.
When can I submit my online application?

  • Winter Semester:     1 March to 15 July
  • Summer Semester:  start of studies not possible
Which documents do I need to submit during my online application?
  • Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD) uni-assist for an application for Universität Bayreuth
    Preliminary review documentation
    Deadline for submitting the VPD in the online application in CAMPUSonline: 15 July
    Please request your VPD via the uni-assist web portal as early as possible - but at the latest 6-8 weeks before the respective application deadline at the University of Bayreuth.

  • Language certificate ENGLISH level C1 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages)

  • Passport
    please provide an electronic copy of your valid passport. If you do not have a German identification card, you may submit a copy of your temporary identification or your international passport.
  • Proof of an appropriate internship
    if and only if your internship is still to take place after your application but before the start of the study programme, please upload an official acceptance letter; the final internship proof must be submitted upon enrolment
  • Secondary school leaving certificate including subjects and grades (e.g. Abitur, High School Diploma, A-Levels, or equivalent)
    original language + certified translation in German or English*
  • Text field individual focus
    this will be available on CAMPUSonline
    Please indicate which focus you would like to choose in the Master's degree programme Development Studies:
    Advanced Global Sociology and Politics / Advanced Global Geography / Advanced International Economics
  • Transcript of records BACHELOR (or for comparable degree) including subjects and grades - at least 150 ECTS points with a final grade corresponding to "good" (2,5) or better on the German grading system
    original language + certified translation in German or English*

*Certified translation in German or English: only required if the document was not issued in German or English

If available or applicable, please also submit the following documents:
  • Degree certificate BACHELOR - with a final grade corresponding to "good" (2,5) or better on the German grading system
    original language + certified translation in German or English*
    you may be enrolled on condition that you submit the certificate by the end of the first semester
  • Language certificate GERMAN level A1 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages)
    find out more - can be obtained during the first year of the programme
  • Admission from the University of Bayreuth for this course of study from a previous semester (and possibly a letter of requirements)
    only to be uploaded by applicants who already got an admission letter from the UBT for the respective master's programme in a previous semester, but did not manage to start their studies

  • Transcript of Records MASTER (or other degree) including subjects and grades
  • Grading Scale MASTER or other degree with maximum grade and minimum final grade required to be awarded the degree – not for passing individual courses (must be issued by your university)
  • If applicable: Degree certificate MASTER
