Funding opportunities within Europe

An internship abroad offers the ideal opportunity to gain practical experience during your studies, expand your expertise and immerse yourself in the international working world.
ERASMUS+ SMP provides support in the implementation of internships abroad. The programme offers bachelor’s and master’s students as well as enrolled doctoral students and graduates monthly funding for self-organized internships abroad at companies, organizations, and universities within Europe.

InternshipHide

You are responsible for finding and organizing an internship abroad.
We are available to answer any questions you may have.

You can find inspiration and possible contacts in our personal reports written by former interns abroad in the Publisher as well as from countless providers and organizations:

ERASMUS+ funding

  • Full-time studies at the University of Bayreuth with the aim of graduating
  • On sight internships directly related to your field of study at UBT
  • full-time internships (40 hours/week or the usual number of full-time hours in the host country)
  • Duration of the internship is at least two months (60 days) and a maximum of 12 months
  • Maximum gross compensation of 1,200 euros
  • Sufficient insurance coverage
  • Proof of sufficient language skills
  • Remaining Erasmus funding capacity  (max 360 days each study cycle)

Important notes:

  • Funding applications can be submitted no earlier than eight weeks before the internship and must be submitted at least four weeks before it begins. Funding cannot be granted retroactively or for internships that have already started.
  • Internships in the country of origin cannot be funded by the Erasmus+ grant.
  • Internships at EU institutions, EU bodies including specialized agencies
  • Stays in Switzerland or the United Kingdom are not eligible.
  • Graduates can be funded for ERASMUS+ internships/practical placements if the internship abroad is completed within one year of the end of the study phase.
AmountHide

The scholarship rates vary depending on the destination country and are between 690 and 750 euros per full month. You can find a current overview of the funding rates here.

ERASMUS funding is calculated on a monthly basis using the above-mentioned funding rates and can be received for a maximum of 360 days per study cycle (exception: single-course degree programs). A combination of studies and internship is possible.

Due to the available funding, a maximum of 120 days per stay will be funded, regardless of the actual length of stay.

The grant is paid out in two instalments:

  • 1st instalment - about 70% of the planned total funding (after receipt of the grant agreement)
  • 2nd instalment - remaining amount of the final total funding (after the end of the stay)

The actual funding entitlement up to 120 days will be offset against the first instalment in the second instalment. If your stay lasts less than 120 days, the calculation will be made on a daily basis.

Additional funding opportunities (top-ups)Hide

Social Top-Up
Students with the following backgrounds can also qualify for a Social Top-Up:

Only one Social Top-Up can be granted, even if several criteria are met.

Green Travel
Students who travel predominantly by climate-friendly means of transportation can receive additional funding days, which can be applied for online during the application process. Applying retroactively is not permitted. Further information can be found in the current DAAD criteria catalogue for additional financial support.

Criteria for social top-upHide

Students and graduates with a disability or chronic illness

  • Students with a chronic illness or a disability with a degree of disability of 20, which results in additional financial needs that are not covered by health insurance, can receive a top-up amount of 250 euros per month.
  • Alternatively, students who incur higher additional costs due to their disability or chronic illness can apply to the DAAD to cover actual costs with the support of the University of Bayreuth. Please contact outgoing-erasmus@uni-bayreuth.de for this purpose. The application must be submitted to the NA DAAD by the University of Bayreuth at least two months before your departure. Unfortunately, applications submitted shortly before or after the start of your studies or internship abroad cannot be considered.

As proof, we ask for a certificate from the treating medical specialist confirming the additional financial requirements.

Students and graduates who go abroad with children

  • Students who are traveling abroad to study with their child/children can apply for this top-up. The prerequisite is that the child or children are taken along for the entire stay.
  • The additional funds can also be granted for couples. However, double funding for one child is excluded.
  • If both parents take at least two children with them, each parent can receive the subsidy for taking one child with them.

Please submit the birth certificates of the child/children as proof.

First-time graduates, students whose parents did not attend university

  • Neither parent/ caregiver has a degree from a university or university of applied sciences.
  • A degree from a university of cooperative education that leads to a degree comparable to a university degree is considered an academic degree. In cases of doubt, please refer to the Internet portal Hochschulkompass provided by the HRK for the evaluation of degrees and to the website of the
    Accreditation Council Foundation.
  • In this context, a master craftsman's certificate is not to be equated with an academic degree.
  • Degree courses completed abroad by one of the parents that are not recognized as such in Germany (e.g. physiotherapy) count as an academic degree within the scope of the eligibility criteria for receiving additional funding, so that there is no entitlement to the top-up amount.

As proof, we ask for a signed declaration of honour from the parents.

Employed students

  • During the minimum period of employment prior to application, the monthly earnings must be above 520 euros and below 850 euros (net earnings of all activities per month added together). Please note: Universities may decide to allow an averaged calculation of earnings while maintaining equal treatment and documentation requirements, provided that the monthly earnings averaged over six consecutive months are above 520 euros and below 850 euros.
  • The activity in the sending country is not continued during the stay abroad (this also includes mobile working, online working, paid vacation, etc.).
Termination is not a prerequisite; the employment contract can also be paused.
  • This does not apply to activities that are carried out on a self-employed basis and dual/professional study programmes with a fixed salary.

As proof, please submit your pay slips for the last few months or the relevant tax assessment notice.

Funding opportunities for sustainable travel (Green Travel Top-Up)Hide

Participants in the Erasmus+ programme should be made aware of the issues of sustainability, climate change, and environmental protection and, in particular, of the ecological footprint that participants generate when travelling. By financially promoting the use of sustainable means of transport, travelling with more environmentally friendly means of transport is to be encouraged and the ecological footprint of the Erasmus+ programme reduced.

According to the ERASMUS+ guidelines, the majority of environmentally friendly travel takes place using sustainable means of transportation such as bus, train, bicycle, or car sharing.

Travelling with your own car and without passengers or by plane or ferry is not considered low-emission.

Participants who need more time to travel due to the use of sustainable means of transport can receive up to six additional funding days to cover accommodation costs for the travel time before and after the mobility as part of the individual funding. The payment of additional funding days is decided on the basis of the travel distance from Bayreuth.

Distance

Funding days

100 - 499 km

one day per direction of travel (outward or homeward journey)

500 - 1999 km

two days per direction of travel (outward or homeward journey)

more than 2000 km

three days per direction of travel (outward or homeward journey)

To calculate the distance, you can use the Erasmus Distance Calculator.

The application for the grant is made online when submitting the planned data for the grant.
According to the regulations of the ERASMUS programme, applying retroactively is not permitted.

Important: Proof of climate-friendly travel is subject to random checks. Original receipts for environmentally friendly travel to and from the university must therefore be kept for five years and submitted to the International Office for verification upon request. If proof cannot be provided, the funding must be repaid.
