Funding opportunities within Europe

In the EU, a self-organised internship in a company or other institution can be funded through the ERASMUS Mobility Placement Programme (SMP).

Under these links you will find Erasmus+ explanatory videos on the topic of internships abroad in Europe:

Important note on Erasmus internship funding (11.03.2024)

Due to insufficient funding, no new internships can currently be funded via Erasmus. We will continue to accept your applications and process them in chronological order in the event of additional funding being granted.

PrerequisitesHide
  • Only full-time internships (40 hours/week) are funded
  • Duration of the internship is a minimum of two months (60 days) and a maximum of 12 months
  • Proof of sufficient language skills
  • Traineeships in the country of origin cannot be supported by the Erasmus+ grant
  • Funding must be applied for at least 6 weeks prior to the start of the internship. A funding of already begun or past internships is not possible

Important:

  • EU institutions, EU programmes, international and European organisations or internships in Switzerland are not eligible for funding.
  • Graduates may be eligible for ERASMUS+ Internships/Internships if they complete the international internship within one year of completion of the relevant study phase.
Funding sumHide

Financial support for Erasmus+ student stays is based on the different costs of living in the destination countries ("Programme Countries").
Erasmus funding for a stay in Switzerland or the United Kingdom is not possible.

Information on the funding rates in the academic year 2024/25 can be found under the 2024 call.
Please note that each month is calculated as 30 days in the Erasmus programme. The daily funding amount therefore corresponds to 1/30 of the monthly funding rate.

Top-up for students and graduates with fewer chancesHide

The Erasmus 2021-2027 programme generation aims to provide additional support for students who have to overcome particular social barriers to study abroad.

These Students with fewer opportunities receive 250 EUR per month in addition to their Erasmus+ grant.

  • Students and graduates with a disability from GdB 20 or a chronic illness
  • Students and graduates who spend their stay abroad with children
  • First-generation university students from a non-academic home
  • Working students

Even if several criteria apply, the Top-Up can only be obtained for one. It is not possible to add up several social Top-Ups.

The application for the additional grant is done online within the erasmus funding form.
According to the regulations of the ERASMUS programme, a subsequent application is not permitted.

Important: Evidence of social top-ups is subject to random checks. Proof must therefore be submitted to the International Office for verification when requested. If it is not possible to provide proof, the funding must be repaid.

Criteria for financial assistance (Top-Up)

Students and graduates with a disability or chornic disease

  • Students with a chronic illness or disability with a degree of disability of 20 resulting in additional financial needs can receive an additional monthly funding.
  • Alternatively, students who face higher additional costs due to their disability or chronic illness can apply to the DAAD for a real cost application with the support of the University of Bayreuth. Please contact outgoing-erasmus@uni-bayreuth.de for this purpose. The application must be submitted to the NA DAAD by the University of Bayreuth at least two months before your departure. Unfortunately, applications submitted shortly before or after the start of your studies or internship abroad cannot be considered.

Students and graduates traveling with their child(ren)

  • Students traveling abroad with their child/children for study abroad can apply for this Top-Up. The requirement is that the child/children are taken with them for the entire stay.
  • The additional funds can also be granted to couples. However, double funding of a child is excluded.
  • If both parents are sponsored when taking at least two children with them, both parents can receive the subsidy for taking one child with them.

First academics Students from a non-academic parental home

  • Both parents or caregivers do not hold a degree from a university or university of applied sciences.
  • A degree from a university of cooperative education leading to a degree comparable to a university degree is considered an academic degree. In cases of doubt, please refer to the Hochschulkompass (Higher Education Compass) Internet portal provided by the HRK (German Rectors' Conference) and to the website of the Foundation Accreditation Council.
In this context, a master's certificate is not to be equated with an academic degree.
  • Courses of study completed abroad by one of the parents that are not recognized as such in Germany (e.g. physiotherapy) are considered to be academic degrees within the scope of the eligibility criteria for receiving the supplementary grant, so that there is no entitlement to the supplementary grant.

Working students

  • During the minimum period of exercise prior to application (6 months), monthly earnings must be above EUR 520 and below EUR 850 (net earnings of all activities per month added up).
  • The activity in the sending country is not continued during the stay abroad (this also includes mobile working, online working, paid vacation, etc.).
  • Termination is not a requirement, the employment contract can also be paused.
  • Excluded are activities performed in self-employment and dual/part-time studies with a fixed salary.

Further information can be found in the current criteria catalogue for additional financial support of the DAAD.

Top-up for sustainable travel (Green Travel)Hide

Participants in the Erasmus+ Programme should be made aware of the issues of sustainability, climate change and environmental protection, and in particular of the ecological footprint that participants create through their mobility. By financially supporting the use of sustainable means of transport, the number of mobilities with more environmentally friendly means of transport shall be increased and the ecological footprint of the Erasmus+ Programme shall be reduced.

According to the ERASMUS+ Guide, environmentally friendly travel is carried out mainly by sustainable means of transport such as bus, train, bike or car sharing.

Travelling in your own car and without passengers, or by plane or ferry, is not considered low-emission and therefore cannot be supplemented by the Top-Up.

The so-called 'Green Top-Up' (one-off travel allowance of 50 euros for sustainable travel) will no longer be funded in the 2024 funding project (academic year 2024/25).

Participants who need more time to travel due to the use of sustainable means of transport can receive up to six additional funding days as part of the individual funding programme to cover accommodation costs for the travel time before and after the mobility. The payment of additional funding days is decided on the basis of the distance travelled from Bayreuth.

DistanceFunding days
100 - 499 km1 day per direction of travel (outward or homeward journey)
500 - 1999 km2 days per direction of travel (outward or homeward journey)
more than 2000 km3 days per direction of travel (outward or homeward journey)

To calculate the distance, you can use the Erasmus Distance Calculator.

The application for the additional grant is done online within the erasmus funding form.
According to the regulations of the ERASMUS programme, a subsequent application is not permitted.

Important: Evidence of climate-friendly travel is subject to random checks. Receipts for environmentally friendly travel to and from the destination must therefore be kept in the original for five years and submitted to the International Office for verification upon request. If it is not possible to provide proof, the funding must be repaid.

Funding amountHide

The grant is calculated on a monthly basis using the above-mentioned funding rates and can be received for a maximum of 360 days per study cycle (exception: single-cycle degree programmes). A combination of study and internship is possible.

The exact funding amount and duration is always depending on the amount of money awarded to the University of Bayreuth by the NA DAAD.

Please note: Due to the available funding a maximum of 120 days per semester will be funded. This maximum funding period cannot be exceeded even by travelling green.

Payment is made in 2 instalments:

  • 1st instalment approx. 70% of the planned total funding (after the start of the stay)
  • 2nd instalment approx. 30% of the final total funding (after the end of the stay)

The actual funding entitlement up to 120 days will then be offset against the first instalment in the second instalment payment. If your stay lasts less than 120 days, the calculation will be made on a daily basis.

ApplicationHide

Please complete the Erasmus SMP application form at least 6 weeks before the start of the internship and send the PDF file generated at the end by e-mail to outgoing-erasmus@uni-bayreuth.de.

Application documents:

  • CV in German
  • Letter of motivation in German (max. 1 page)
  • Language certificate (school certificate also accepted)
  • Transcript of Records (cmlife)
