The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports the "PROMOS" programme with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Funding ScopeHide

Partial scholarship for costs of the stay

Nominated students in the study visit and internship funding programmes receive a partial scholarship for their stay as part of the PROMOS scholarship.
The monthly partial scholarship instalment depends on the country. You can find an overview of the current country flat rates here.

The funding amount of your scholarship depends on the available funding budget. Please note that PROMOS funding cannot be guaranteed for the entire duration of your stay, but only on a pro rata basis. The funding period is currently limited to up to 2 months. A shorter funding period is also possible.

Your scholarship is calculated by multiplying the corresponding country allowance by a funding period of e.g. 2 months.

The funding period and the amount of the scholarship are set out in the scholarship agreement. The document is created and sent by email after the required funding documents have been submitted.

The scholarship is paid out in the form of a one-off payment.

One-time payment for courses

Short stays such as specialised and language courses are funded with a one-time payment of €500. The partial scholarship for costs of the stay is not paid out in these categories.

Partial mobility scholarship

The partial mobility scholarship (travel allowance) is generally not offered at the University of Bayreuth. We will keep you informed of any changes.

Possible combinations of PROMOS with other scholarships

  • DAAD individual scholarships and PROMOS scholarships may not be claimed at the same time.
  • The Deutschlandstipendium and PROMOS scholarships can be awarded simultaneously without restriction.
  • Double funding from German public funds is not permitted. If German public funds are used to support stays abroad, the purpose pursued is decisive. This means that PROMOS funding is not possible if the same purpose is already being pursued with German public funds.
  • Scholarships from private funds can be awarded alongside PROMOS scholarships without restriction.
  • Paid activities during the term of the scholarship may only be carried out with the consent of the project organiser.

The University of Bayreuth would like to point out that PROMOS funding must be reported to other public German scholarship providers.

If you receive BAföG, you are obligated to report your PROMOS scholarship to the responsible office for BAföG abroad.

PROMOS ApplicationHide

A PROMOS application is possible even if you do not yet have a letter of acceptance, internship contract or certificate of participation at the time of application. The firm intention of your carrying out your project is initially sufficient for a PROMOS application.

PROMOS applications are made and submitted exclusively via the MoveOn portal. The application portal is only open during the application periods.
Only complete applications submitted on time can be considered in the allocation process.

Deadlines

  • Application period 15 October to 1 December
for projects starting in the first half of the following year (January - June)

  • Application period 15 April to 1 June
for projects starting in the second half (July - December) of the same year

Application documents

The following documents are required for an application:

  • Current performance overview (PDF from cmlife)
If 20 ECTS points have not yet been achieved in the current master's degree programme, the bachelor's certificate serves as proof of the specified average performance.
  • Letter of motivation
The template for the letter of motivation with the points to be addressed can be found in the online application form and here.
  • Language certificate
(DAAD, UBT performance overview, UNIcert, IELTS, Cambridge, TOEFL etc.). Official proof of your language skills in the language of instruction or working language is required.
A graduation diploma issued in an English speaking country is an accepted proof of language proficiency
If German is the working language, please submit proof of the national language.
Proof must not be older than two years (exception: transcript of records).
  • Certificate of enrolment at the UBT
  • Copy of passport
  • Letter of acceptance from the host university or confirmation of internship or supervision (if already available at the time of application)
Selection criteriaHide

Scholarship holders are selected on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Language certificate (language hurdle model)
  • Academic achievement (75%)
  • Sense and purpose of the planned stay for the further course of study (25%)

The language hurdle model is used for quality assurance in the selection process. Successful applicants must provide proof of sufficient foreign language skills in the language of instruction or working language in the form of a current language certificate. Applicants who do not meet this language requirement cannot be considered in the selection process.

Application and selection procedureHide

Only complete applications submitted on time will be considered in the selection process. Applications with missing or invalid language certificates will not be given further consideration.

Your complete application documents will be assessed on the basis of a points system, whereby your academic achievements will be weighted at 75% and your letter of motivation at 25%. The Presidential Advisory Committee for International Affairs decides on the selection of scholarship holders based on the files.

You can only be nominated if you have not yet started your project and the start date is within the relevant application deadline window.

Applicants who are generally considered eligible for funding but have not received a nomination due to insufficient funding will be placed on a waiting list. In the event of additional funding being granted by the DAAD or in the event of nominees being cancelled, applicants from the waiting list may move up. Should this occur, we will contact you immediately by e-mail.

The results of the selection process will be communicated via the MoveOn system in the course of December and June.

Funding documentsHide

If your application is successful and you are thus nominated for the PROMOS scholarship, all required funding documents need to be uploaded and submitted via the MoveOn portal. The scholarship can only be processed and finalised once the documents have been received.

The following proof is required at this time:

  • Letter of acceptance/internship contract/supervision agreement
  • Proof of a course load of 20 ECTS points for study visits
  • Certificate of enrolment from the UBT for the period of the stay
  • Visa/proof of flight booking

Proof can be provided as soon as it is available. There is no general submission deadline.

You will then receive your scholarship agreement, which you must sign and send back to outgoing-global-promos@uni-bayreuth.de . The funding will then be paid out.

Final documentsHide

After the stay, a personal report and the transcript of records, or a certificate of internship or a certificate of participation are due.
The documents must be uploaded to your MoveOn portal. The conditions of the scholarship agreement have not been met until these documents have been submitted.

Travel warnings and general insurance informationHide

Travel warnings

If the Federal Foreign Office has issued a travel warning for the country or region in question, the University of Bayreuth may not conclude or issue a scholarship agreement/scholarship confirmation. Mobility for teaching purposes does not belong to the category of "non-essential and tourist travel".

If the Federal Foreign Office issues a travel warning after the start of the stay, the scholarship holders are requested to leave for Germany.

Scholarship holders are advised to register on the website of the Federal Foreign Office (electronic registration: "Elefand"), especially when travelling to regions with a critical security situation.

For information on general security precautions for trips abroad, please visit the homepage of the DAAD.

Scholarship holders should continue to check regularly on the current travel and security situation in their host country during their stay. We advise downloading the Foreign Office app and checking the country-specific information for your host country.

General insurance information

For the duration of the stay abroad, sufficient insurance coverage is required. Scholarship holders should obtain information about this directly from their insurance company or from the DAAD.

It is advisable to take out supplementary international health insurance and liability insurance that provides coverage in the relevant host country.

Please note that neither the PROMOS scholarship of the DAAD nor the International Office of the University of Bayreuth offers insurance coverage and that scholarship holders have to pay for these services themselves
