Funding rates in the Erasmus+ programme generation 2021-2027

Support for studying abroad through the Erasmus programme includes tuition fee waivers at our Erasmus partner universities abroad as well as partial financial support from EU funds.

The amount of funding is determined by the German Academic Exchange Service for the whole of Germany. The funding rates can only be viewed on this page. Please note that different funding rates may apply in different project years. The application at the University of Bayreuth is determined by the available funding budget and funding project.

Requirements for an erasmus fundingHide

Only stays can be funded that:

  • take place at one of our subject-related partner universities in the Erasmus+ programme,
  • do not take place in the country of origin,
  • are associated with the acquisition (not recognition) of at least 20 ECTS points at the host university,
  • are completed during the enrolment phase at UBT.
Funding rates for mobilityHide

The financial support for Erasmus+ semester stays is based on the different costs of living in the destination countries as well as the social background of the students and the choice of means of transport.

Funding for a stay in Switzerland is not possible via ERASMUS. Information on funding for stays in Switzerland can be obtained directly from the respective host university after a successful application. Stays in the United Kingdom are only possible under certain conditions via Erasmus+ SMS International.

Country rates

The following funding rates apply in the current 2024 funding project and in the 2025 funding project

  • Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden: EUR 600 / month
  • Estonia, Greece, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Turkey, Hungary: EUR 540 / month

Please note that in the Erasmus programme each month is calculated as 30 days. The daily funding amount therefore corresponds to 1/30 of the monthly funding rate. Currently, 120 days per semester can be funded. You can find out more about this under the ‘Funding amount’ tab.

Travel allowance

In addition, students in the 2025 funding project receive a travel allowance, which depends on the travel distance from Bayreuth to the host university and the means of transport used (see funding opportunities for sustainable travel) as well as travel days funded as required.

Additional travel days

Participants who need more time to travel due to the use of sustainable modes of transport can receive up to six additional travel days as part of individual support to cover accommodation costs for travel time before and after mobility, in accordance with the guidelines for individual support. For more information, see Funding opportunities for sustainable travel.

If a journey is not undertaken using ‘green means of transport’, up to two additional days of travel can be applied for, depending on requirements. Authorisation is decided on a case-by-case basis.

We recommend the following additional travel days:

Top-up for students and graduates with fewer opportunitiesHide

In the Erasmus+ programme of the 2021-2027 programme generation, students who have to overcome special social hurdles in the event of a stay abroad are to receive additional support (Social Top-Up).

For this reason, students with so-called ‘fewer opportunities’ in the current projects receive EUR 250 per month in addition to their Erasmus+ grant.

According to the ERASMUS+ guidelines, this currently applies to the following groups:

Even if several criteria apply, the top-up can only be granted once. It is not possible to add several social top-ups together.

The application for the grant is made online when submitting the planned data for the grant.

According to the ERASMUS programme regulations, subsequent applications are not permitted.

Criteria for financial aid

Students with a disability or chronic illness

  • Students with a chronic illness or a disability with a degree of disability of 20, which results in additional financial needs that are not covered by health insurance, can receive a top-up amount of 250 euros per month.

As proof, we ask for a certificate from the treating medical professional confirming the additional financial need.

  • Alternatively, students who incur higher additional costs due to their disability or chronic illness can apply to the DAAD for real costs with the support of the University of Bayreuth. Please contact outgoing-erasmus@uni-bayreuth.de for this purpose. The application must be submitted to the NA DAAD by the University of Bayreuth at least two months before your departure. Unfortunately, applications submitted shortly before or after the start of your studies abroad cannot be considered.

Students travelling abroad with children

  • Students who are travelling abroad with their child/children to study can apply for this top-up. The prerequisite is that the child or children are taken along for the entire stay.
  • The additional funding can also be granted for couples. However, double sponsorship of a child is excluded.
  • If both parents are subsidised when taking at least two children with them, both parents can receive the subsidy for taking one child with them.

Please submit the birth certificates of the child/children as proof.

Students from a non-academic family

  • Neither parent or carer has a degree from a university or university of applied sciences.
  • A degree from a university of cooperative education that leads to a qualification comparable to a university degree is to be counted as an academic qualification. In cases of doubt, please refer to the Internet portal Hochschulkompass provided by the HRK and the website of the Accreditation Council Foundation for the evaluation of degrees.
  • In this context, a master craftsman's certificate is not to be equated with an academic degree.
  • Degree courses completed abroad by one of the parents that are not recognised as such in Germany (e.g. physiotherapy) are deemed to be academic qualifications in the context of the eligibility criteria for receiving additional funding, meaning that there is no entitlement to the top-up amount.

As proof, we ask for a signed declaration of honour from the parents.

Employed students

  • During the minimum period of employment prior to application, the monthly income must be above EUR 520 and below EUR 850 (net earnings from all activities added up per month). Please note: Universities may decide to allow an averaged calculation of earnings while maintaining equal treatment and documentation requirements, provided that the earnings averaged over six consecutive months are above EUR 520 and below EUR 850 per month.
  • The activity in the country of posting is not continued during the stay abroad (this also includes mobile working, online working, paid holidays, etc.).
  • Cancellation is not a prerequisite; the employment contract can also be paused.
  • This does not apply to self-employed activities and dual/part-time study programmes with a fixed salary.

Please submit your salary slips for the last few months or the relevant tax assessment notice as proof.

Funding opportunities for sustainable travel (Green Travel)Hide

Participants in the Erasmus+ programme should be made aware of the issues of sustainability, climate change and environmental protection and, in particular, of the ecological footprint that participants generate through their mobility. By financially promoting the use of sustainable means of transport, the number of mobilities with more environmentally friendly means of transport is to be increased and the ecological footprint of the Erasmus+ programme reduced.

According to the Erasmus+ guidelines, the majority (>50%) of environmentally friendly journeys are made using sustainable means of transport such as bus, train, bicycle or car sharing.

Travelling by car without a passenger or by plane or ferry is not considered low-emission.

Participants who need more time to travel due to the use of sustainable means of transport can receive up to six additional travel days to cover accommodation costs for the travel time before and after the mobility in accordance with the guidelines for individual support in addition to the higher travel allowance.

We recommend the following additional support days:

DistanceFunding days
100 - 499 km1 day per direction of travel (outward or homeward journey)
500 - 1999 km2 days per direction of travel (outward or homeward journey)
more than 2000 km3 days per direction of travel (outward or homeward journey)

You can apply for the subsidy online when submitting the planned dates for the subsidy.

If you require more travel days than indicated here, you can submit an application in the online form.

Important:

  • According to the ERASMUS programme regulations, subsequent applications are not permitted.
  • Proof of climate-friendly travel will be checked on a random basis. The original receipts for environmentally friendly travel to and from the programme must therefore be kept for five years and submitted to the International Office for verification upon request. If proof cannot be provided, the funding must be repaid.
Funding amountHide

Funding is calculated monthly on the basis of the above-mentioned funding rates and can be drawn for a maximum of 360 days per study cycle (exception: single-course degree programmes). A combination of study programme and internship is possible.

Please note:

  • Due to the available funding in the 2024 project, a maximum of 120 days per semester will be funded in the 2024/25 academic year. This regulation also applies to the 2025 project and the 2025/26 academic year.
  • A prerequisite for Erasmus funding is the acquisition of 20 ECTS points at the host university. The recognition of these for the study programme in Bayreuth is not mandatory.

The recognition of these for the study programme in Bayreuth is not mandatory.

Payment is made in 2 instalments:

  • 1st instalment - approximately 70% of the planned total funding (after the start of the stay)
  • 2nd instalment - remaining amount of the final total funding (after the end of the stay)

The basis for the first payment is the period of stay specified by the host university in the Letter of Acceptance.

The final calculation of the funding amount is based on the actual duration of the stay, which is confirmed by the foreign host university in the Certificate of Attendance.

This actual funding entitlement up to a maximum of 120 days will then be offset against the first instalment in the second instalment payment. If your stay lasts less than 120 days, the calculation will be made on a daily basis.

Introductory weeks or language course at the foreign universityHide

Language courses or introductory events at the foreign university that take place before the actual start of the semester can also be funded. However, the maximum funding period of 120 days cannot be exceeded for these either.

A confirmation of participation must be submitted with the other documents as proof.

Reclaiming the grant for study abroadHide

The International Office must provide the DAAD / EU in Bonn with proof of study abroad in the form of complete funding documents. If the documents have not been submitted in full, the entire study abroad grant must be repaid.

The basis for repayment is also the completion of less than 20 ECTS points per semester at the host university abroad.
