What academic qualifications do I need for this degree programme?

You need a bachelor’s degree from the University of Bayreuth or any other German university in any of the following subject areas: Chemistry, Polymer and Colloid Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Material Science and Materials Engineering, Engineering Science or an equivalent degree from another university.
In particular, a successfully completed bachelor's degree in a quantitative natural science subject or a successfully completed bachelor's degree in an engineering subject in specialization areas with primarily general engineering, electrical engineering, process engineering, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, or materials science content is recognized as an equivalent degree.

This must include the following academic credits or credits equivalent thereto: 

  • Advanced mathematics plus physics amounting to at least 18 credit points (of which advanced mathematics is at least 8 credits and physics is at least 5 credits) and
  • chemistry amounting to at least 4 credits.

  • Transcript of records BACHELOR (or for comparable degree) including subjects and grades - at least 150 ECTS points

  • Grading Scale BACHELOR with maximum grade and minimum final grade required to be awarded the degree – not for passing individual courses (must be issued by your university)

  • Written presentation of course-specific competences (motivation letter)
    a written justification of a maximum of 2 A4 pages for the choice of the master’s programme, in which the applicant explains the specific talents based on which he or she considers himself or herself particularly suitable for the desired programme
If available or applicable, please also submit the following documents:
  • Degree certificate BACHELOR
    original language + certified translation in German or English*
    you may be enrolled on condition that you submit the certificate by the end of the first semester
  • Evidence of special qualifications or additional professional qualifications
    e.g. vocational training, internships, stays abroad or voluntary participation in courses that go beyond the compulsory courses
  • Language certificate GERMAN level A1

  • List of modules for which no evidence of performance exists yet
    only required if your studies have not yet been completed
  • Request for disadvantage compensation
    If you are unable to take an aptitude test in whole or in part in the intended form due to a prolonged or permanent disability, an application for disadvantage compensation can be made. Proof of the examination disability must be provided in the form of a medical certificate, which can be uploaded here.
  • Admission from the University of Bayreuth for this course of study from a previous semester (and possibly a letter of requirements)
    only to be uploaded by applicants who already got an admission letter from the UBT for the respective master's programme in a previous semester, but did not manage to start their studies
